The Friends of SSAFA Somerset (FOSS) was established in 2000 by Sir Jerry Wiggin and Brigadier DP de C Morgan. As a committee it was set the challenge of raising £10,000 a year to support the Somerset Branch of SSAFA.
Initially this target was reached through sponsorship and organising public events. More recently, the target has been realised through excellent support from groups within the local community who kindly organise events – Taunton Thespians have performed several annual open air productions in support of us. Or it might be a folk group or a fashion outlet who wish to organise something to include the general public.
Sir Jerry Wiggin also started what has now become the annual golf day which is held at Wedmore Golf Club. This is a very popular occasion and one of the most successful fund raising events each year.
Besides fund raising, FOSS also undertakes to raise awareness about the work of SSAFA. Our publicity officer, Pauline Homeshaw, gives regular talks to local groups in the county such as Rotary, PROBUS, W.I. or indeed anyone who asks! By spreading the word of the role of SSAFA so support for our fund raising is also encouraged.
Events planned for the year are clearly shown on our website and we would be pleased to hear from anyone who thinks they would like to help in any way – either in organising something or joining in to help with organisation. It can be something as simple as a coffee morning or perhaps opening a garden for an afternoon.
We hope you will be able to join in with our fund raising and we look forward to meeting you at some of the events which have been planned.
