St Mary Magdalene, Taunton
Saturday 27th October 2018
St Mary Magdalene, Taunton was filled to capacity with an appreciative audience last Saturday when the Taunton Deane Male Voice Choir, the Taunton Military Wives Choir and the Royal Air Force Association Concert Band performed a poignant and yet stirring concert to mark the Armistice in 1918.
The event was held in support of SSAFA – The Armed Forces Charity and a generous audience means that many more serving, ex-service people and their families in Somerset can be supported by SSAFA as they have been since it’s beginnings in 1885, and especially during the First World War.
Special guests at the concert included Admiral of the Fleet Sir Benjamin Bathurst GCB DL and Lady Bathurst, Mayor of Taunton Deane Councillor Catherine Herbert and her Consort, Denis Burn Esq, High Sheriff of Somerset, Rebecca Powe MP and Mr Charles Clark, Air Marshall Sir Baz North KCB OBE MA and Lady North and Chairman of SSAFA Somerset, Rear Admiral Andrew Gough CB and Mrs Gough.
Poignant, stirring and thoughtful music and words made the concert a perfect commemoration for the audience to absorb the thoughts and memories that so many families have with the Great War. The three musical elements of the evening balanced each other well and gave a fitting tribute to those who fought for our freedom.
